Where passionate runners and their dogs hit the trails, build fitness, and have fun.

Whether you're new to Canicross or aiming to beat your personal best, we’re here to support you every step (and paw) of the way.

Run Stronger Together with Consett Canicross

We’re here to help grow the sport of Canicross across County Durham, offering friendly, inclusive group runs that keep both you and your dog active, healthy, and connected.

Consett Canicross offers up to four social and training runs per week, each led by experienced and qualified team members.

Sessions may be run by a Sporty Paws Certified Canicross Instructor with over 20 years of experience as a human Strength & Conditioning Coach, a qualified Canicross Coach with an England Athletics Run Leader accreditation, or a Canicross Run Leader with various dog-related qualifications.

No matter who’s leading, one thing is always true: we love dogs (and we don’t mind a few hills either!).

  • What is Canicross?

Canicross is the exciting and fast-growing sport of cross-country running with your dog, using specially designed equipment that allows you to run as a team. Whether you're looking to build fitness, strengthen your bond with your dog, or just have fun outdoors, Canicross is a fantastic way to enjoy the trails together.

  • The Origins of Canicross

Inspired by the world of sled dog sports, Canicross began in Europe as an off-season training method for sledding teams. It has since evolved into a popular recreational sport, suitable for all levels of runners and dog breeds, provided your dog has the enthusiasm to run and explore.

  • How it Works

In Canicross, your dog wears a padded harness attached to you via a bungee line and waist belt. This setup allows your dog to run safely ahead and even help pull you forward—making it a true team effort! All activity is done off-road, often on scenic trails and woodland paths, avoiding hard tarmac surfaces.

  • Is Your Dog Ready for Canicross?

To protect their developing bodies, dogs must be fully grown before joining Canicross sessions—usually between 12 and 18 months of age. This ensures their bones, joints, and growth plates are strong enough to handle the physical demands of trail running.

Our mission is to provide a professional, safe, and educational Canicross experience for everyone — whether you're just starting out or aiming to compete at a high level.

What makes us unique?
