Consett Canicross

What is Canicross? In simple terms - the sport of cross country running with your dog using specially designed equipment allowing the dog and owner to run together as a team!

Based on the concept of sled dogs, the sport originated in Europe as off-season training for the sledding community and has now become popular as a recreational sport for dog and owner teams. Canicross is designed as a sport to be performed as off-road trail running.

Dogs must be fully grown (usually between 1 year and 18 months old) to participate in Canicross activity due to it’s high impact nature, to avoid damage to the dog’s bones, joints and growth plates whilst they are still growing.

What do you need?

  1. A dog (dogs are able to participate once they’ve reached full maturity - normally 1 year for small breeds and 18 months for larger dogs)

  2. Correctly Fitted Canicross Harness

  3. Bungee Lead

  4. Belt

  5. Trail Running Shoes

  6. Headtorch (Evening Runs)

Sessions are lead by a Sporty Paws Certified Canicross Instructor with over 20 years of experience as a Strength & Conditioning Coach (human) and a love of dogs.

Consett Canicross hopes to promote the sport across County Durham through a range of Social Running Group Sessions (FREE to Members), 1-2-1 Training, Face-to-Face Couch-2-5k Programs and Trail Events.
